Pierre Gaggini (1903 - 2006) was the nephew and pupil of Albert Louis Blanchi, with whom he served his apprenticeship. In 1924 he came to Paris for three years to fulfill his military service. During this period he collaborated with Louis Billotet for whom he made some violins. In 1927 he returned to Nice to resume working with his uncle with whom he stayed seven more years. In 1934 he established his own workshop in Nice. Gaggini’s production can be divided in two periods. From 1934 to 1942, his model is close to Blanchi's. In 1942 he started to work after his own pattern, a larger and more square model, which he then kept throughout his professional life. In 1982 Gaggini's production was estimated to consist of 380 violins, 50 violas, 26 cellos and 4 pochettes. Gaggini won several medals and diplomas in international competitions including The Hague in 1949 where he was honored for a quartet, and Liege in 1957 where he received a gold medal and first prize for sonority and workmanship.

Rare old viola by Julius Zoller 1948   Nº 663

Probably the only one left rare Julius Zoller viola. This viola has the soundholes in the ribs (5 on each side), and has a 5th sympathetic string under the fingerboard tuned in F.
Julius Zoller violins were complete novelty in body shape and design: circular lower bout, and followed by a rectangular top with rounded top corners, arching almost no groove, no sound holes in the table, but in the ribs on both sides of each 5 elongated openings (approximately 8x25 mm), rather than a purfling there's an insert flat heel, the saddle is only loosely attached to the table. The 5 pegs are thin metal shafts with plastic handles; flexible bridge with 4 feet attached to the table. Very rare collector's instrument - there are only 2 Julius Zoller violins left shown in public: Berlin Musical Instrument Museum and Museum of old and rare instruments of Leipzig University.

A unique possibility to get a very rare viola with impressive sound.

Great loud, warm and mature sound - listen to the sound on youtube ! Measures aprox.: total 67 cm / 25.2", body 40 cm / 15.7", vibrating chord length 36 cm / 13.6", weight 639 gr / 22.58 oz. For further questions please feel free to ask.
